Here are the 8 ladies that we chose to spotlight in our 2017 Fashion For Cure Campaign!
Susan Gerdes
Susan’s mother’s had a mastectomy at the age of 44 prompting her doctor to begin mammograms early, at 30 years old. Years later, thanks to regular mammograms and knowledge of her family history, Susan’s breast cancer was found in its early stages. After a lumpectomy, she did not need radiation and was able to opt out of further therapies. Doctors still monitor her levels every three months, but Susan has been cancer-free for over 5 years.

Valerie Bunt
Valerie's breast cancer struck at age 25, just six months after giving birth to her daughter, Alyssa. Today, she stands here as the proud mother of an almost eight year old. At her initial doctor visit, she was told she was “too young” to have cancer or even a mammogram for that matter. But her intuition and good gut instincts led her to get a second opinion within just months of that first doctor’s appointment.

Now, a breast cancer survivor, she is part of a growing number of younger women helping to shine the light on the importance of early detection, mammograms for younger women and most importantly, for women to listen to their own bodies and internal voices.
Dr. Linda Ongley
Although Linda was diagnosed 12 years ago, she still remembers the fear--of both the unknown and mortality. She was angry that she had cancer and needed a distraction from her disease. Feeling like she had nothing to lose, Linda joined a Kung Fu Tournament--even though she had never before competed in sports and was always deemed as the “artsy kid” in school. Linda practiced intensely, and two weeks after completing her radiation, she won a bronze in her first competition. Linda is thankful for her husband, who was “her rock” through first, dental school, and now through her breast cancer. She is happy the memory of her breast cancer has faded and hopes it stays just that--a memory.

Pamela Burnett
As a respected long-time activist, founder of The Beautiful Gate Cancer Support & Resource Center (TBG), and a breast cancer survivor herself, Pamela knows firsthand what it is to lack proper resources when diagnosed with a life-threatening disease. After her breast cancer diagnosis, Pamela became even more committed to making a difference in the lives of others diagnosed with cancer. Today, she travels the state presenting her MASS Program, which brings breast health education to underserved populations and helps save lives by preventing late stage diagnoses.

Kira Vainberg
Originally from Ukraine, and more recently from Israel, Kira was diagnosed with breast cancer for the first time just one month before she was due to move to the United States. She had no family history of breast cancer and did not test positive for any BRCA mutations. Kira was cancer-free for two years, but two months ago, was diagnosed a second time. She underwent a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction, and is currently recovering and healing.

Kira has recently returned to work, feeling positive and hoping to feel better every day.

Melissa Ricks-Baio
At the age of 33, Melissa was diagnosed with triple-negative infiltrating ductal carcinoma. Young, with a 4-year-old daughter, husband, and fast-paced career as a massage therapist, she felt a sudden loss of control over her life. An otherwise healthy person who exercised, did not smoke, only drank socially, who tested negative for any BRCA mutations, and had no family history, Melissa was shocked and unsure how she got breast cancer. Melissa had a double mastectomy and reconstruction with expanders followed by 6 rounds of 3 different chemotherapy drugs.

Nadine Rosario
At the age of 42, Nadine was diagnosed with Invasive Stage II Triple Negative Breast Cancer. Now, Nadine has been a “Cancer Thriver” of 6 years. She is also a member of The Heroines Choir which endeavors to improve the mind, body, and spirit of women with health issues while inspiring audiences through the healing art of singing. Working to inspire others while being a role model of perseverance, gives Nadine incentive to continue to her journey to greater health.

Elena Yi
Elena’s breast cancer journey began with stages 1 and 2 on the right breast and stages 2 and 3 on the left breast with lymph nodes removed. Treatment began with a double mastectomy. A second surgery included the removal of both ovaries and fallopian tube to keep hormones at bay. Then Elena had two kinds of chemotherapy--losing her hair in the process--followed by 28 rounds of radiation treatments. Presently, she is finishing five years of oral chemotherapy pills, and continues to be monitored by a team of doctors. She suffers from fatigue, irritated bowel syndrome, and arthritic pain in her joints, but daily exercise and acupuncture help to alleviate symptoms. Through her pain and recovery, Elena still tries to keep her chin up and smile every day.
